Why add a border
A border frames a picture: white borders make product photos and quotes look clean on social media, coloured borders match a brand, and borders add a safe margin for printing so nothing important is cut off at the edge.
How it works
Choose the border width in pixels, from 0 to 500, and any colour. The border is added around the outside of the picture, so nothing is covered or cropped — the picture grows by twice the border width in each direction. The result is saved as a PNG.
Choosing width and colour
For phone-size pictures of about 1080 pixels, 20–60 pixels looks balanced. White or light grey suits most photos; black looks dramatic for art and gallery-style posts; brand colours suit business posts. Square posts look neatest when you crop to 1:1 before adding the border.
Common problems and how to fix them
The border looks too thin on a large photo: border width is in pixels, so large pictures need wider borders. The post is no longer square: add equal borders to a square picture, or crop again afterwards. The file is big: convert to JPG with Image to JPG.
Good habits
Use the same border style for a series of posts, keep the original, and preview the result on the platform where it will be posted.
