    About Sepia Image

When is it useful? Sepia Image gives a photo the warm brown tone of old photographs — popular for vintage invitations, memorial pictures, heritage posts and creative social media designs.

Good to know: the classic sepia colour formula is applied to every pixel, so bright areas become cream and dark areas become brown. The effect is strong and cannot be adjusted here; transparency is kept and the result is saved as a PNG without camera details.

Example: for a 50th anniversary invitation, turning a recent couple photo into sepia gives it the warm look of an old family album. Combine it with a cream border from Add Image Border for a classic printed style.

    Sepia Image: a complete guide

Where the sepia look comes from

Sepia toning was a chemical process used in early photography that gave prints a warm brown tone and helped them last longer. Today the sepia look instantly says “vintage”, which is why it is popular for anniversary invitations, memorial pictures, heritage posts and old-style designs.

    How it works

The standard sepia colour formula is applied to every pixel: the red, green and blue values are mixed into warm browns, so highlights become cream and shadows become dark brown. Transparency is kept and the result is saved as a PNG file.

    Getting the best vintage effect

Photos with clear light and shade look best. Add a cream or white border with Add Image Border for an old printed-photo feel, or round the corners with Round Image Corners. Very dark photos should be brightened first, because sepia toning makes images slightly darker.

Common problems and how to fix them

The effect is too strong: this tool applies the classic full sepia tone; for a lighter effect, blend it with the original in an editor. Faces look too dark: brighten the photo first with Adjust Image Brightness. The file is large: convert it to JPG afterwards.

    Good habits

Keep the colour original, try the effect on a copy, and use it for a few special pictures rather than every photo.
