    About Remove Duplicate Lines

When is it useful? Remove Duplicate Lines deletes repeated lines from a text file — perfect for email and phone lists, keyword lists, inventory codes and log files where each entry should appear only once.

Good to know: the first time a line appears it is kept, later copies are removed, and the original order stays the same. Tick “Ignore letter case” so that Apple and apple count as the same line. Lines must match exactly, so extra spaces make lines different.

Example: you combine email lists from three events and many people appear more than once. Trim the lines first, tick “Ignore letter case”, and each address is kept only once, so nobody receives your announcement two or three times.

    Tips for Better Results

    • Run Trim Text Lines first so spaces at the ends do not hide duplicates.
    • Use Sort Text Lines afterwards if you want an alphabetical list.
    • The file must be UTF-8 and up to 2 MB.

    Guide

Remove Duplicate Lines: a complete guide

    Why duplicates are a problem

Combined contact lists send the same message twice, repeated keywords waste effort, duplicate product codes confuse stock counts, and repeated log lines hide real problems. Cleaning duplicates makes every list shorter and more reliable.

    How it works

Upload a UTF-8 .txt file of up to 2 MB. The first time each line appears it is kept; later identical lines are removed, and the original order of the remaining lines does not change. Tick “Ignore letter case” so that lines differing only in capital letters count as the same, using the rules of the language you choose.

    What counts as a duplicate

Lines must match exactly: an extra space, a different punctuation mark or an invisible tab makes two lines different. Empty lines are treated like any other line, so only the first empty line is kept.

Common problems and how to fix them

Obvious duplicates remain: they differ by spaces at the ends — run Trim Text Lines first. Needed blank lines disappeared: duplicates of the empty line are removed; add spacing back afterwards if needed. Different spellings of the same name remain: those are not exact duplicates and must be fixed by hand.

    Good habits

Trim and lowercase lists before removing duplicates, sort the result if order does not matter, and keep the original list.
