Where the 100 KB limit comes from
Many government, exam, scholarship and recruitment portals in India limit each uploaded document to 100 KB — caste and income certificates, mark sheets, ID proofs, experience letters. A phone scan of just one page is often 500 KB to 2 MB, so it gets rejected.
What happens when you compress
The tool rebuilds each page as a compressed picture and searches step by step for the highest quality that still fits under 100 KB (1 KB = 1,024 bytes, the way Windows and most portals count). The final size is shown before you download and is always below 100 KB. If the PDF is already under 100 KB, it is returned unchanged.
How many pages fit in 100 KB
One to three scanned pages usually stay clearly readable. With more pages, each page gets less space and text becomes soft. If the document cannot fit while staying readable, the tool tells you the smallest readable size instead of giving you a blurred, useless file.
Common problems and how to fix them
The tool says it cannot fit: tick “Black & white”, which saves a lot of space for text documents; remove unneeded pages; or split the PDF and upload the parts if the portal allows several files. Stamps or signatures became faint: try again without black & white. The portal says the file is still too big: some portals count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes — aim a little lower by removing a page.
Good habits
Crop away borders before compressing, keep the original high-quality scan safe, and open the compressed PDF on your phone to check that every word is readable before uploading.
