Why make a form fillable
Printed-style PDF forms force people to print, write by hand and scan. A fillable form lets them type answers on a computer or phone, tick boxes and choose options — the result is neater, faster to process and easier to read.
How it works
Choose the field type: single-line text, multiple-line text, checkbox, or dropdown (type the choices separated by |). Give a field name prefix such as name or phone, then drag on the page where the field should go. Each field gets a unique numbered name. Fields are added on top of the existing page, which stays unchanged.
Designing a good form
Place text fields exactly over the blank lines or boxes on the page, leave a small margin so text does not touch the lines, use multiple-line fields for addresses and descriptions, and dropdowns for fixed answers such as states or departments. Clear prefixes make the collected data easier to understand later.
Common problems and how to fix them
“This page is rotated”: set it upright with Rotate PDF first. A field name is refused: use only letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. Typed text is too big for a box: draw the field slightly taller, or ask people to use a viewer that auto-sizes text.
Good habits
Test the form yourself with Fill PDF Forms before sending it, keep the non-fillable original, and tell people which viewer to use for filling (Adobe Reader or a browser).
